IE9 Beta downloaded 10 million times, more details on Developer Preview 6

A few moments ago Dean Hachamovitch took the stage at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference, summarily bounced around, and then gave us the news: IE9 Beta has now been downloaded over 10 million times, in just six weeks.

Today also sees the release of Platform Preview 6, which unfortunately -- as far as non-developers are concerned -- doesn't feature any significant outwardly-facing changes. Under the hood, however, there have been lots of bug fixes and performance enhancements. News is good on the standards-compliance front, too: IE9 now has support for CSS3 2D transforms and HTML5 semantic tags. For further details, check the release notes.

The real question, though, revolves around IE9 Beta 2. When is it due? And if the rumors about IE9 launching in January 2011 are true, is there even time for a second beta?IE9 Beta downloaded 10 million times, more details on Developer Preview 6 originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 12:32:00 EST. HTC Desire HD vs. EVO 4G... fight!

By now you've probably read our Desire HD review and you've seen how HTC's latest Android flagship stacks up against its Windows Phone 7 sibling, the HD7. But how does it fare against the original Android giant, Sprint's EVO 4G? The devices share common displays (4.3-inch WVGA) and cameras (8 megapixel with dual LED flash) -- but they use different radios (HSPA+ versus CDMA / WiMAX) and processors (first-generation Snapdragon in the EVO, second-gen in the Desire). In fact, the two phones actually have very different personalities when you consider the Desire HD's aluminum unibody case and the EVO 4G's HDMI output and kickstand. Take a look at these mighty beasts side-by-side in our gallery -- along with a video after the break!

Note: In the video we mention that the Desire HD features a front facing camera. This is incorrect.

iPhone locked for early 2011 on Verizon, says Fortune

Though Verizon famously turned down the original iPhone before Apple ultimately signed a deal with AT&T, the company's outspoken CEO -- Ivan Seidenberg -- has been very careful over the past couple years to note that he'd love to eventually have an iPhone in his lineup. With Verizon Wireless boss Lowell McAdam tapped to take over the top job next year, what'd be a better swan song for Seidenberg than to finally pull it off? Fortune's new profile of the longstanding chief exec and elder statesman is reporting in very matter-of-fact terms that a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 will be a reality on Verizon in "early 2011," lining up with most of the rumors the interwebs has been generating over the past few months.

The piece details the phone as the culmination of literally years of careful discussions between Seidenberg, McAdams, and Steve Jobs; Verizon's guys claim that Jobs acknowledged in late 2007 that the two companies had "missed something" by failing to partner up. The first visible fruit of those talks is the MiFi-bundled iPad that just launched, but that's clearly a minor stepping stone on the way to an actual handset. Fortune reports that Jobs has voiced his concerns over CDMA in the past and the fact that it doesn't work in nearly as many countries as GSM does, but the story goes on to say that the first model on Verizon's shelves "probably" won't be dual-mode and presumably won't have compatibility with the company's shiny new LTE network, either. If true, that'll make for an interesting battle for the spotlight in the first few months of 2011 as an EV-DO iPhone wages war with a number of LTE phones -- some of which look downright gorgeous -- and might put Verizon in the awkward position of having to heavily push two almost diametrically opposed handset and platform initiatives. Furthermore, it's hard to deny that a Verizon iPhone would stress the carrier's network in ways it's never been stressed before; they may be prepared for it, but there's no way of knowing until it all goes down and they get a sense for uptake and conquests from AT&T. Translation: McAdam looks to have a busy 2011 ahead of him as he transitions into the new office.iPhone locked for early 2011 on Verizon, says Fortune originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 16:23:00 EDT. The PlayStation Phone: new photos, more details!

We've gotten our hands on some more images of the PlayStation Phone, and gleaned a few more juicy details about the handset. Firstly, as you can see in the photos, the model in question does indeed seem to be codenamed "Zeus" (as we reported on the 27th). Furthermore, the handset pictured is running Android 2.2, though apparently there are multiple devices out there with different versions on board (including at least one packed with Android 3.0). Based on what we know, there's little chance the phone will launch with Froyo -- but it's clear these have been worked on for some time with various versions of the OS.

The device appears to have an 8GB microSD card slotted, and at least 512MB of internal storage (though we're hoping it's the 1GB we've heard would be present). As you can see from the pictures in the gallery below, the device isn't exactly thin -- we surmise that the handset is around 17mm thick, or slightly thicker than HTC's Touch Pro 2 (and funnily enough, about the same as the PSPgo). From a design standpoint, the device seems to have more in common with BlackBerry handsets than previous Sony Ericsson phones; that smoky chrome bezel which surrounds the device is definitely giving us Torch flashbacks. As always, we're hard at work digging up more info on the phone (and potentially more images), but for now, just sit tight and enjoy the exclusive photos in the gallery below.

Unlocked GSM Palm Pre 2 to be 'available direct from HP,' Gorilla Glass on the front

We've been toying with a Palm Pre 2 for a few weeks now, but given that it's not "final hardware," we can't exactly make any firm judgments on the unit itself. Tim Pettitt, product manager for HP Palm, can. In speaking with MarkGuim.tv (and slyly handling a Verizon Pre 2), he not only confirmed that the company was relying on a layer of the famed Gorilla Glass to keep the front as scratch-resistant as possible, but also that the five megapixel camera is capable of capturing a shot every second. More importantly, however, he made clear that it wouldn't be just the developers nabbing an unlocked GSM Pre 2. According to Tim, that very handset will be "available direct from HP.com," though he stopped short of saying whether it would support T-Mobile's AWS 3G band. For AT&T loyalists, however, we're guessing this may be the best way to nab webOS on the network that's still rethinking possible.

CCleaner version 3 goes 64-bit, adds secure disk wipe, Windows 7 integration

When it comes to system cleanup programs, CCleaner is pretty much the hands-down favorite with Download Squad readers. It's been a trusted tool for years, and the newly-released CCleaner 3 is better than ever.

What's new in v3? To start, there's now a native 64-bit version in both the installer and portable CCleaner. Windows 7 users also get the benefit of a handy jump list, which offers quick access to the cleaner, registry scanner, tools, and options pages. There's also a new disk wiping tool included which supports DOD, NSA, and Gutmann standards.

CCleaner 3 has improved support for Internet Explorer 9, Google Chrome, and Silverlight. Perhaps the app's best new feature is support for HTML5 localStorage objects -- which many websites are now using to store persistent user data.

Entourage Pocket Edge reveals itself on the Home Shopping Network

We're still trying to understand why Entourage has chosen the Home Shopping Network of all places to reveal its new Pocket Edge, but at least we now know that the previously spied dualscreen tablet / e-reader lives! Although the 1.35-pound device has been shrunken down with smaller displays -- a 6-inch "Wacom Penabled" e-ink panel and 7-inch LCD -- it actually doesn't appear like much else has been changed from the original. Unfortunately, that means our biggest complaints about the device are very much present -- it's got a resistive touchscreen and appears to run an older version of Android. If it's any consolation, the trackball on the right edge has been replaced with an optical touchpad and there are now red and black color options. Spec-wise, it still boasts 4GB of storage, a 2 megapixel camera (hopefully there's software now that takes advantage of it), 802.11 b/g, a USB port, and micro-SD slot. It is, however, more affordable -- though it's originally priced at $499, HSN has a sale running that puts it at $399. Of course, no word on if a 3G version will be arriving at Verizon as we've previously heard, but we're sure this thing will get its official unveil sometime soon. Redbox announces plans to enter streaming business next year

It may not be quite the same obvious transition that Netflix made, but it looks like DVD kiosk company Redbox will soon be making a push of its own into the streaming business. That word comes straight from the CEO of parent company Coinstar, Paul Davis, who told listeners to the company's recent earnings call that it is in "detailed negotiations with a number of highly interested parties" to launch a "Redbox-branded" streaming service sometime next year. That would seem to suggest that Redbox will be relying on a partner already established in the field rather than rolling its own service, but Davis was otherwise light on details, adding only that streaming represents a "significant opportunity" for the company. That doesn't mean Redbox will be getting out of the kiosk business anytime soon, though -- according to Davis, there's still a "long, profitable life ahead" there.Redbox announces plans to enter streaming business next year originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 14:41:00 EDT. Hundred Year Starship Initiative plans to put people on Mars by 2030, bring them back by... well, never (video)

For a while now, there has been a conversation going on in certain circles (you know, space circles): namely, if the most prohibitive part of a manned flight to Mars would be the return trip, why bother returning at all? And besides the whole "dying alone on a hostile planet 55-million-plus kilometers from your family, friends, and loved ones" thing, we think it's a pretty solid consideration. This is just one of the topics of discussion at a recent Long Now Foundation event in San Francisco, where NASA Ames Research Center Director Pete Worden discussed the Hundred Year Starship Initiative, a project NASA Ames and DARPA are undertaking to fund a mission to the red planet by 2030. Indeed if the space program "is now really aimed at settling other worlds," as Worden said, what better way to encourage a permanent settlement than the promise that there will be no coming back -- unless, of course, they figure out how to return on their own. Of course, it's not like they're being left to die: the astronauts can expect supplies from home while they figure out how to get things up and running. As Arizona State University's Dr. Paul Davies, author of a recent paper in Journal of Cosmology, writes, "It would really be little different from the first white settlers of the North American continent, who left Europe with little expectation of return." Except with much less gravity. See Worden spout off in the video after the break.Continue reading Hundred Year Starship Initiative plans to put people on Mars by 2030, bring them back by... well, never (video)Hundred Year Starship Initiative plans to put people on Mars by 2030, bring them back by... well, never (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 31 Oct 2010 03:03:00 EDT. Feign 2 is an eerie, artsy first-person maze game -- Time-Waster

Quiet, blocky, cryptic, and minimalistic. These are the first adjectives that come to mind when I think of Feign 2. It's a maze game, but it's built like an FPS (first-person shooter). So, it's like Quake with a creepy soundtrack, but there are no monsters.
Your goal is to collect nine bodies by navigating the maze. The whole thing is done up in shades of gray, but the bodies are bright orange. They're almost iridescent, so they're very easy to spot, but they're not so easy to find. This means that once you're in the vicinity of a body, you won't miss it. However, if it's hiding just behind a wall or two, you're in for a bit of hunting.
This is not an arcade game. I think it's something to do while you're on the phone, because you can easily pause, and it's not fast-paced. You don't really "pause" per se - you just stop moving, and nothing happens.
Bottom line: Feign 2 is soothing, artsy, and just a tad creepy.Feign 2 is an eerie, artsy first-person maze game -- Time-Waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 13:15:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Robot Wants Ice Cream is a fun retro platformer -- Time-Waster

Robot Wants Ice Cream does not actually have ice cream. At least not as far as I was able to tell.
What it does have is a robot. Well, to be exact, it has a robot, a dog, a ton of bad guys, 8-bit music, and bosses that you have to beat. You can tell when you're facing a boss because it's huge, and the music gets all "Bowser" when one of them shows up. There are also bonuses that make you jump higher, shoot faster, and generally become a more awesome, ice cream-loving robot.
Most importantly, there are lots and lots of save points, and if you die, you instantly reincarnate. You don't even lose your bonuses!
As far as time-wasters go, this isn't a quick one. It leans more towards the "addictive" side of the scale. If you have any sort of affinity for 8-bit graphics, robots, and cute puppies, you really should give it a spin.Robot Wants Ice Cream is a fun retro platformer -- Time-Waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 12:30:00 EST. Nikon?s 3D Android-Powered Picture-Frame is Just Plain Weird

Is this a Nikon Android tablet? Well, not quite, but it’s pretty damn close. The NF-300i is a 3D, 7.2-inch digital photo frame that runs the Android 2.1 OS. If it had a touch-screen, then it would be a tablet.
Nikon’s frame, available only in Japan, is as full of gimmicks as you could wish for. [...]

Pandoc is a Swiss Army knife text conversion utility

I love Markdown. If you write any sort of content for the Web, you really should try it; it's a simple notation system for making text bold or italic, creating headlines and bulleted lists, and more. To make text bold, for example, you just need to surround it with asterisks.
Converting Markdown into valid HTML is a fairly common task, and there's no dearth of tools that do this. But Pandoc caught my eye because it can do this and a whole lot more. Plus it's free, open source, and cross-platform.
Pandoc understands Markdown, HTML, and several other formats, and it can output:

plain text - i.e., strip all HTML and give you just the text
Markdown - so you can convert HTML back into Markdown for editing
And a whole list of other formats, including HTML, LaTeX, ConTeXt, PDF, RTF, DocBook XML, OpenDocument XML, ODT, GNU Texinfo, MediaWiki markup, groff man pages, EPUB ebooks, and S5 and Slidy HTML slide shows

It even supports PDF output using a helper utility. So yes, it can convert Markdown to HTML (and vice versa), but it can do so much more, too. It's definitely one for the toolbox!Pandoc is a Swiss Army knife text conversion utility originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 10:00:00 EST. Sprint CEO thanks iPad for uptick in Overdrive demand

Well, wouldn't you know it? Seems that tongue-in-cheek marketing campaign may actually be working. Way back in April of this year, Sprint decided it would begin offering its own iPad case, despite the fact that even today the iPad isn't sold in Sprint stores. The reason? It's the perfect opportunity to push the Overdrive, a 4G mobile hotspot that's able to take the iPad (and any other WiFi-enabled device) to 4G speeds where available. In a recent interview with GigaOM, the carrier's CEO (Dan Hesse) confirmed that most iPads being sold are of the WiFi variety, and due to that, "the company has seen an uptick in demand for its Overdrive (3G/4G) wireless-hotspot device, as people use it to connect their iPads to the Internet when on the go." He failed to exaggerate on actual numbers, but it's obvious he's in favor of Apple's darling tablet selling like hotcakes -- after all, how else are you going to get an iDevice into 4G territory?Sprint CEO thanks iPad for uptick in Overdrive demand originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 21:21:00 EDT. Lars Rasmussen, Father Of Google Maps And Google Wave, Heads To Facebook

When Google put their faith in Wave, an ambitious new project last year, they knew it was a gamble. But a big part of it was the team behind the project. A team led by Lars Rasmussen, the engineer best known as the co-creator of the hugely successful Google Maps. And now he's left the company. And from what we hear, he's heading to Facebook.

Rasmussen confirmed his departure on his Facebook page. Yesterday was his last day of work at Google. He didn't give any indication where he'll be heading next, other than he'd be "a whole big ocean closer" (he was living in Australia where the Wave team was based). But the fact that he put all this info on Facebook is telling. From what we're hearing, he will be joining Facebook.

The Sexy Details of How the iPad and MacBook Will Hook Up

During the Back to the Mac event, Steve Jobs made a particularly witty remark that made the audience giddy with laughter:

?We asked ourselves, what would happen if a MacBook and an iPad hooked up? Well, this is the result, we think it?s the future of notebooks.?

There is always a deep strategic intent with the things that Apple does, especially when it comes from Steve Jobs. The first phase in ?hooking up? that took place between the MacBook Air and iPad foretells a deeply converged future on many levels.

Offsite for Google Chrome helps you discover related content

Full disclosure: AOL is DownloadSquad's parent company

AOL has been busy re-tooling itself ever since head honcho Tim Armstrong took the reigns, and one area that has received a lot of attention is social networking and content discovery. Lifestream is, perhaps, AOL's biggest social app, and now there's a second: Offsite.

Currently, Offsite is available as an extension for Google Chrome. Once installed, simply click the icon in your Omnibar (or the folded-over page corner in the top left) to load the Offsite overlay. The page you're currently viewing slides down and to the right, with relevant tweets taking the left column and related posts from other websites appears at the top (image after the break). A stream of trending topics is also shown, and Digg, Twitter, and AOL Mail sharing buttons are provided. Offsite also displays the page's "heat index," giving you a vague idea how popular it is right now.

Unlike AOL Lifestream for Chrome, Offsite loads in a flash. While it's handy in its current state, I'd like to see the sharing options tweaked. Facebook should be an option, and support for other email providers (and even the good old mailto:) would be a welcome improvement.

I'd also like to see this implemented as a bookmarklet so that users of other browsers can use Offsite -- which shouldn't be hard, given the nature of most Chrome extensions.

Brad Sucks Digital Download Store is a free, easy-to-install Web storefront

Canadian Brad Turcotte, AKA Brad Sucks, makes music. In fact, he makes open source music, and he lets people download the source files of his songs for free and remix them into all sorts of weird creations.
Given his open source musical model, it should come as no surprise to you that Brad is a nerd. And as a nerd, he scratched his own itch and created the Brad Sucks Digital Download Store.
The store is aimed mainly at selling digital goods, and it relies on existing solutions for storage and billing. That means an Amazon S3 account is recommended (but not required), and a PayPal account is required. The store generates expiring URLs for downloading your content, and it gives buyers instant access to your content once they've paid up.
One feature that's missing is a "pay as much as you want" option, a la Bandcamp. That's not a bad idea, and it's one that I hope to see Brad implementing in the future.
And while you're at Brad's site, go check out his upcoming album, Guess Who's a Mess. Not all of the tracks are ready, but you can already listen to some full-length tunes.Brad Sucks Digital Download Store is a free, easy-to-install Web storefront originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 14:29:00 EST. Firefox 4 to ship at the beginning of 2011

Filed under: Mozilla, BrowsersMike Beltzner, the Director of Firefox, has just confirmed that the Firefox 4 release candidates will appear at the beginning of 2011. The Firefox 4 Beta wiki has also been updated to reflect the goals, targets and deliverables of the last few months of the beta testing process.

The next release, Beta 7, which is due out in the next week or two, is the most important of them all. Mozilla has now ordered a 'code freeze' for Firefox, meaning no new features can be added -- Beta 7 will be, for all intents and purposes, Firefox 4. After its release it becomes a matter of getting the almost-finished browser into the hands of add-on developers, ironing out bugs, and ultimately delivering a stable release candidate.

In other news, Firefox 3.6.12 was released only a few minutes ago. It fixed a critical security vulnerability that was exploited earlier today on the Nobel Peace Prize website.Firefox 4 to ship at the beginning of 2011 originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 17:37:00 EST. Wake up the Box 2 is a cute physics Time-Waster

In Wake up the Box 2, the object of the game is to ... wake up the box! Yup, there's a box, and it's asleep. And as soon as something jars it hard enough, it wakes up, and you get to move on to the next level.
Each level is a tiny physics playing field. You get a piece of wood (or sometimes two or three, but always in a set sequence), and you can then connect that piece of wood to other pieces of wood that are already shown on the level. This causes all sorts of actions to occur. For example, things can become lopsided and tip over.
Pretty soon, though, other forces come into play. Balls start rolling and impacting against your creations, and there's an unnamed substance (which looks like iron) that makes wood vanish on touch. That's important, because you can have a ball that's made of the stuff roll onto a piece of wood and make it disappear at just the right time.
The game starts off very easy, but around level eight it becomes more challenging. Go ahead, give it a try!Wake up the Box 2 is a cute physics Time-Waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 13:30:00 EST. Droid Incredible Case Review: Seidio Innocase II Surface case

The HTC Droid Incredible is one of the most popular Droid devices around -- period. With its super fast processor and beautiful 3.7-inch display, you'll find yourself wanting to show this phone off to everyone around you. In doing so, you probably want to pick up the Seidio Innocase II Surface case. This case highlights the design of the phone, all while providing one of the sturdiest Droid Incredible cases around. The case feels much like the backing of the Incredible's battery door. With its soft-touch feel, the case still keeps a solid and rather sturdy form. The backing also follows and highlights the contours and curvatures that this Droid is known for. As for the extremities, such as the camera and power button -- each is exposed, but protected. As for the inside of the case, you'll find felt pieces on both halves of the case (see pictures after the break). This provides a nice touch to keeping the phone snug, while not scratching up the backing of the phone.Once on, the case literally hugs the phone all around. As the two halves connect around the phone, a very small raised tab on the bottom half, locks the the two pieces together. To unlock, simply push down where the tab lies, and pull the top half away. The Seidio Innocase II Surface case for the Droid Incredible carries a long name -- but delivers as one of the best hard shell cases around and is available from the Android Central Store for $29.95. More photos after the break.

The Linux credit card -- with Tux on the front and everything

Filed under: Fun, Open SourceI couldn't make this up if I tried: The Linux Foundation is offering a platinum rewards Visa credit card. There is no annual fee, a low introductory APR -- in fact, it's a normal credit card with Tux on the front.

Every purchase you make with the Linux credit card will kick back a percentage to the Linux Foundation. The Foundation also gets $50 for every activation! In the words of the Foundation, this card is for "those who want to support the Linux Foundation's activities while expressing their commitment to Linux. The Linux credit card is an easy way for anyone to contribute to the growth of Linux and identify themselves as supporters of the community by carrying Tux in their pocket."

Unfortunately it's for U.S citizens only, otherwise I'd sign up right now! If you're going to rack up credit, why not do it in a way that benefits the most important software movement of the last 20 years? Why don't more charities have credit cards...?

For Apple, AT&T Is The Company You Sleep With, Verizon Is The Company You Marry

Have you heard the news? The Verizon iPhone is coming. Today, Fortune has the 15th or so confirmation that the device will launch in early 2011. There's way too much smoke now for there not to be a fire. But even more interesting than that tidbit is Fortune's interview with Ivan Seidenberg, the CEO of Verizon. He wouldn't speak directly about a Verizon iPhone launch, but he still had plenty to say about the device, and Apple's CEO Steve Jobs.

The most interesting thing he had to say was the last bit about the iPhone in the piece:
According to Seidenberg, Jobs told him during a December 2009 meeting, "Decisions you made [at Verizon] are decisions we would make at Apple."
That sounds like it's Jobs more or less saying that he respects Verizon because they stood up to him. They wouldn'tcompromiseon their vision.

Cowon's capacious X7 media player gets the hands-on treatment, longs for WiFi

Cowon's X7 still hasn't made its stateside debut, but apparently it's out and about on the streets of France. This 4.3-inch, HDD-packin' portable media player was recently caught in the wild by Le Journal du Geek, with early impressions noting that the UI is pleasant to use, the weight a bit heavy and the build quality something to admire. For those who've forgotten, it manages a 480 x 272 screen resolution, Bluetooth, TV-out, an inbuilt microphone and compatibility with nearly every file format ever conceived. Still, the omission of WiFi is a touch troubling in today's world of converge-or-go-home, but it's tough to argue with 120GB (€299; $414) or 160GB (€329; $455) of storage space. Mozilla pays 12-year-old $3000 for finding critical vulnerability in Firefox

Filed under: Fun, MozillaAlex Miller, a 12-year-old from San Jose, California, just cashed a $3000 check for finding a buffer overflow bug in 'document.write'.

The bug, which was was one the major security vulnerabilities fixed in this week's releases of Firefox 3.6.11 and 3.5.14, was discovered by Alex after spending 'about 90 minutes each day for 10 days'. In other words, he pored through code for 15 hours and made $3000, or $200 per hour. Not bad for a 12-year-old!

If you want to get in on the bug bounty hunting action -- because let's face it, if a kid can find a bug in 15 hours, an adult could do it much faster -- just head on over to Mozilla Developer Central. It's October 28th, and Verizon's full suite of data plans have changed just as foretold -- if you want to save a few bucks, you can revise your megabyte-munching lifestyle right now. There's no need to fear for unlimited 3G smartphone data, as it's still available for the usual $29.99, but that plan's no longer required when buying a new Droid, as you can opt for a new $14.99 plan if you can bare to live with just 150 megabytes. We'll spare you the full breakdown on mobile broadband plans -- as you can find it at our original post right here -- rght down to that promotional 3GB MiFi and Fivespot plan for $35 a month.

After A Five Month Stay (And $750M Acquisition), AdMob CEO Omar Hamoui Leaves Google

Today, less than a year after the deal closed, AdMob founder and CEO Omar Hamoui is leaving Google, we've confirmed with the company. Google says Hamoui is leaving for personal reasons.

It sounds like Google is getting the short end of the stick here ?Hamoui has actually only been able to work at the search giant for five months, because the AdMob/Google acquisition was held up by an endless federal investigation that stretched on from November 2009 through the end of May 2010 ?an eternity in this highlycompetitivespace.

ASUS lays out Armdroid and Wintel tablet plans, we already feel overwhelmed

Leave it to ASUS to blast out an entire series of tablets that saturate the market in a single go. Many of these have already been mentioned, leaked, or even revealed at trade shows. But now we've got company president, Jerry Shen, filling in the launch details. Starting in December, ASUS will begin launching tablets in 7-, 9-, 10-, and 12-inch form factors. The 12-inch model will run Windows on an Intel chipset and be ready for purchase in January. Of interest, Shen says that Microsoft assisted in the development by making several enhancements to related technologies including touch control and the user interface. In March ASUS will launch a pair of 7 inchers (one with WiFi and the other with "3.5G" and phone functions) and another pair of 9-inch tablets (an ARM-based Tegra 2 model running Android and another Wintel tablet) with a price gap of $100. Of course, we've see a 10-incher around as well. That means we should see a grand total of five or six tablets from ASUS at CES in January.
